Person of the Week

Barry Newman

Steve Soderbergh's The Limey was released last year. It was one of that year's best films. My friend Benita and I were talking about it the other day as it has become her new favorite movie. We started talking about the actor who plays Peter Fonda's head of security. He's fantastic. Kind of a little guy*, about 60, with big yellow tinted sunglasses. Real cool in a weird sort of way. My buddy Pete loved The Limey too and he and I had talked about this actor. This actor, Barry Newman...

with Charlotte Rampling

Barry Newman is 61 as a matter of fact. Probably best known for his television series, "Petrocelli" and "Nightingales," and his leading role in the film Vanishing Point, he's also been in Bowfinger and Daylight. Tom Keogh from Film.com says (about Newman in The Limey): "The best portrait of exasperated love is that of Valentine's brutal security chief and attorney (Barry Newman in a very interesting performance) for his cowardly client." It is a very interesting performance. It's like out of nowhere; hard to describe. It's better than perfect.with wife

The Vanishing Point, which I have not seen yet** but will rent this week, is a kind of cult classic. There is some stuff on the web about it. Newman stars in this early seventies car chase movie as Kowalski, an outlaw of sorts all hopped up on speed. There's more than one version of "Vanishing Point," so don't be surprised if you've never seen the scenes in which speed-popping Kowalski (Barry Newman) gets robbed by hitchhikers played by Anthony James, left, and Arthur Malet (below, right); or Charlotte Rampling playing a hitch-hiker that Kowalski sleeps with (above).

*Fresh news (12.08.00) from the Barry Newman camp. His personal manager relates that Barry is actually 6 feet tall. He may look shorter, in the picture of him with his wife, as she is 6'2". Reportedly, Barry was pleased with this page on him! Hopefully, I will be able to get some more info on him soon...

**I have now seen it. Pretty out there. A 70s existential car-chase movie. Smokey & the Bandit Meets William S. Burroughs. Newman is great. Doesn't speak much. Prefers to swallow his speed without water. Naked girl riding around on a motorcycle in the desert. He tries to make a drive from Denver to SF in, I guess, 36 hours. And everybody's like "you'll never make it, man!" But what's funny is that I drove from Denver to Lake Tahoe in 16 hours once. And it's only 3 more to SF. Whatever. It's a neat movie... Correction from David Sutton, on May 16, 2006 "Hey, great web page, very informative. I have a correction though. On your Barry Newman page, about the movie Vanishing Point, Kowalski has to get from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours, not 36. So, your trip to Tahoe in 16 was pretty good, and San Fran is in fact another 4 hours from Tahoe. IMDB trivia says he'd have to maintain 85 mph average to do it. Ah well." Thanks David!

Barry lived in N.Y. most of his life and performed on Broadway in the following plays between 1960 and 1969.

Braodway musical, What Makes Sammy Run?; The N.Y. Production of The Mouse Trap; Sidney Kingsley's play Night Life; Mel Tolkin's play Maybe Tuesday; Off Broadway in America Hurrah... to name a few.

Jack the Dog will be shown at Sundance on Jan. 27. The films Good Advice and 40 Days and 40 Nights will be released sometime this year.

TV Pilot "Wilder Days"; a one hour show was not picked up last year... although reportedly a very innovative, hip idea).
