Izabella Scorupco From this month's Movieline: The tall, lithe, blonde beauty in skintight leather pants striding across the lobby of a Beverly HIlls hotel looks like Michelle Pfeiffer crossed with Claudia Schiffer, assuming both were having very good days. What she doesn't look like is who she is: Polish actress Izabella Scorupco. It's got to be the hair. When we in the States last saw her, Scorupco was playing the brainy Russian computer whiz who teamed up with James Bond in 1995's GoldenEye, and she had a mousy brown 'do that might have been a crafted by a Siberian army stylist who'd glimpsed some fuzzy images from an early episode of "Friends." "Ugh, I know," Scorupco moans, realizing that this is how most Americans remember her. "But I was playing a computer nerd. Still, it was ridiculous. My hair was so retarded." The Swedish-raised Scorupco, a former model and European pop star, gets a sportier look for the upcoming action adventure The Vertical Limit, in which she teams with Chris O'Donnell and Scott Glenn, and plays an expert mountain climber on a mission to rescue Robin Tunney from the frigid peaks of K2, the world's second-highest pinnacle. The seven-month-long shoot took place way, way up in New Zealand -- at around 10,000 feet, where the air is pure but there isn't much of it. "I was literally thinking I was going to die," says Scorupco. "We were freezing our everythings off. But it was glamorous -- we had a toilet up there. They flew it up on a helicopter." Though she learned serious climbing skills for the film, Scorupco never exactly took to the joys of scaling heights. "I never thought I'd let someone hang me off a cliff thousands of feet off the ground," she says. "It's surreal." The key to her willingness to cling to icy slopes was director Martin Campbell with whom she also did GoldenEye. "I would do anything for Martin," she says of the director who might yet make her a Hollywood star. "He's so dedicated. He has more energy than anyone. And he's absolutely crazy. I love him. If he'd called me and said, "We're shooting a movie in New Zealand -- there are no parts, but we want you to play a sheep,' I would do it." She adds, however, "I still think mountain climbing is absolute madness." -- Joshua Mooney.
Izabella was born on the 4th of June in 1970 in Bialystok, a village in Northeast Poland close to the Russian boarder. She lived with her mother Magdalena, who is a doctor, until they came to Sweden in 1978 to live in Stockholm. Izabella studied drama and music at school. When she was seventeen she was discovered by a Swedish film director and took her first part in a movie called "Ingen kan älska som vi" -- after which she became a teenage idol! No doubt. After school, while occasionally modeling in Sweden and abroad, she wanted to develop her singing and it resulted in the single "Substitute" in 1989. It became quite a success and sold gold in Sweden. As did her album "Iza" released shortly after. The music was inspired by the 70s and the ABBA era. The hit album had a follow-up in 1991 when Izabella recorded a new single "Shame, Shame, Shame". In 1994 when Izabella decided to resume her acting career she got the leading part in a medieval drama called "Petri Tårar", as the seducer Carla Marcellini, who lives her life as a man. When the film was released in Sweden it got very good reviews from the press. In January 1995 Izabella became the new Bondgirl. She played the role of Natalya, starring with Pierce Brosnan, in the Bond adventure "Golden Eye." The film was released in Novemebr 95 and again her acting got very good reviews. In September 1997 Izabella and her husband, the Hockey player Mariuz Czerkawaski, had daughter Julia. From February to June 1998 Izabella was filming with the Polish director Jerzy Hoffman in his motion picture "With Fire and Sword" playing the leading part "Helena". The movie was released in February 99. From January 1999 she was chosen to be the spokesperson for the well known cosmetics company Oriflame.
