Hollywood celebrity photographer Sid Avery dies at 83

Hollywood celebrity photographer Sid Avery died of cancer at 83 on July 1, 2002. He captured the Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 1960s in their private moments.

Avery's intimate photos of Marlon Brando eating breakfast, Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself on the set of "Giant" in 1955, Audrey Hepburn taking a bike ride with her dog, and Rock Hudson fresh from the shower, gave a movie-hungry public a glimpse of the "ordinary" lives of celebrities in an age when stars were cherished rather than chased.

After his "retirement" in the mid-1980s, he founded the Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive (MPTV) to save for posterity the work of numerous Hollywood photographers whose prints, stills and negatives were being lost through indifference or neglect.
